A hint of summer on Father's Day, at Yellowcraig beach, East Lothian. Our barbecue was humble: pork sausages and mornings rolls from Morrisons, swallowed down with mango juice. My inept planning - forgetting to buy firelighters at the supermarket, and discovered only once we'd built the bonfire, required partner to zoom off to local shops to purchase some - meant the challenge was to cook the sausages before the tide swept over our chosen spot.

Despite the fact it was the middle of June, I still packed a fleece in my rucksack, just in case, but it was more like t-shirt weather. The late afternoon light on these East coast beaches takes some beating.

The only sad thing was the discovery of a dead seal, washed up on the sand.
Contentedly yours
Jane
