It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man required to travel abroad for work is in need of a companion. So, loathed to shirk my duty, I downed tools and flew to Vienna with my partner. November is a wonderful time to visit Austria's capital city. The combination of wintry sunshine, autumnal trees and a lack of tourists - too late for summer, too early for the Christmas markets - added to the appeal.

While my partner presented papers and facilitated workshops at conferences, I wandered the old city, absorbing its stunning architecture and green spaces. We met for dinner, devouring plates of goulash and rösti potatoes, and Vienna's famous sacher torte - chocolate cake.
As darkness fell on my first day's sightseeing, the bells of the magnificent St Stephen's Cathedral filled my consciousness. There's always one highlight on a trip away. This was it.
