Forget about being run over by cars. Concentrate, instead, on avoiding the same fate by cyclists. According to my guide book, there are 660,000 bicycles in Amsterdam and a population of 750,000. That's a high percentage when allowing for those either too young or too old to cycle. Cycling around the city is a great idea, in theory, and having cycle paths between pavements and roads is the obvious way to do things. It just necessitates additional memory and spatial awareness. After two days here, I apparently have acquired neither.
That aside, have spent many pleasant hours wandering by canals, enjoying the light on water, indulging in fantasies about living on a houseboat, observing different architectural styles - picturesque rather than splendid. As dusk approaches and lights appear, there's the joy of looking through those huge floor to ceiling unshuttered, uncurtained windows at a tableau of bracket lamps and paintings, tables and sofas. Then finding a cosy restaurant for dinner.
